Attending Football Games at Shouldice? – Cost to attend is $2 and you must show student ID or your schedule on PowerSchool – if you don’t have both, you will be turned away at the gate. Adult gate fee is $5.00.
Attending Athletics' Events – If you are planning on attending an Athletics' event this year, and the event is taking place in our Main Gym after school hours (volleyball, basketball, for example), please note that entry will only be permitted through the south entry doors, closest to the Main Gym. The front, yellow pillar doors will remain locked.
The Test Centre – is a teacher supervised, after school program in the Learning Commons that provides an opportunity for students who need to catch up on assignments or missed exams. The Test Centre is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:50 – 5:10. Students need to show up ready to work and must be sponsored by a teacher. The Test Centre is accessible to all students. The Test Centre opens on Tuesday, September 22nd. Please see your subject teacher for more information or to arrange for a time to catch up on missed work or exams.
Student Fundraising Opportunities - Individual Fundraising has now started! At Bowness High School we have a program that allows students to fundraise, raising money for their own expenses (School fees, athletic fees, school trips, Graduation Banquet tickets, etc.). Students can participate in any fundraisers throughout the year, and all money will be put in an account in their name in the Business Office to be spent as needed or can be saved to use in future years. If you participated last year and are unsure of how much money you have, please email teschmidt@cbe.ab.ca to find out. If you want to use your money to pay fees, please contact the Business Office to have money applied to your account. School Council – Next meeting of the school year is Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30pm. All parents and guardians of current students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please enter the school through the main yellow pillar doors. Treats will be provided by our amazing Culinary Arts Program!
Cell Phones and Personal Mobile Devices (PMDs) in High School
At Bowness High School, the rules around Cell Phones and Personal Mobile Devices are determined by the provincial government and our board’s administrative regulation (AR 6008). Below is a synopsis of the CBE’s Cell Phone policy:
· Students may not use PMDs during instructional time, unless such use is approved by the classroom teacher to facilitate learning activities.
· Students who choose to bring one or more PMD to school must store the device(s) out of sight and in silent mode or powered off during instructional time.
· The security and storage of these items is the sole responsibility of the owner or user. CBE assumes no responsibility for the safety, security, loss, repair or replacement of student PMDs.
· Parents are asked to refrain from contacting their child/student on their PMD during the school day to avoid unnecessary distraction.
· Students who bring PMDs to school are expected to comply with all parts of this Administrative Regulation as well as Administrative Regulation 6005 – Student Code of Conduct. Students who refuse to comply with CBE’s regulations for the use of PMDs in the school setting may be subject to disciplinary measures as per Administrative Regulation 6006 – Progressive Student Discipline.
· Students with Individual Program Plans that specifically allow for PMD use as an accommodation, may be granted exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Students with a completed Student Health Plan that identifies the need for PMD use due to a documented medical condition may be granted exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
· Student PMDs are not permitted to be used in bathrooms or changing rooms under any circumstances.
Game Donations - to help our students disconnect from their phones and provide them with an opportunity to spend time together, Ms. Martinez will be offering a board games club during lunch on Mondays and Wednesdays. To build the library in the classroom, we are looking for donations. If you have a board game you no longer use and would like to donate, we would be happy to take it! If you would like to contribute and can do so, please send the game with your student to Ms. Martinez in Room 1033.
Some ideas could include games such as Uno, dominoes, Trouble, Telestrations, Puzzles (100 to 300 pc.), Card games, etc...

Post Secondary Visits and Information Sessions - Over the next few months, Student Services will be hosting several post-secondary school visits for our students, in the form of an information booth over flex and lunch, or a lunchtime presentation. We encourage both Grade 11 and 12 students to visit, attend the information sessions, and learn about what is offered. Dates for these visits will be posted on the Student Services D2L Wellness shell, along with our announcements.

YMAP (YMCA achievement program) Is a free pre-registered program for high school youth and young adults who are newcomers to Canada. Through weekly after-school sessions YMAP youth work to develop essential skills that assist in a positive and healthy integration into Canada, while also maintaining and celebrating their cultures of origin. They engage in community work through volunteer and fundraising projects throughout the city.

Paid Civic Work Experience Opportunity: Elections Alberta is hiring election officers for the October 19 referendum. You must be at least 16 years of age. No resume or previous election experience is required. Go to the Elections Alberta website and click on the Jobs tab for more information about the application process.
In accordance with CBE Policies around student safety, the doors to the school are now locked. Access to the building is by buzzer during regular office hours. Students required to have access for activities outside office hours must be under the direct supervision of a Bowness High School staff member. Arrangements for access will be made directly with the staff member. The doorbell for the school is located at the yellow pillar entrance, and anyone wishing to enter will need to identify themselves to gain access.
Attendance Process – please email bowness@cbe.ab.ca if your student is going to be late, absent, or needs to leave early. Please include the student’s name and details of the absence including start and end date or time. Email makes it easier to track, reduce errors and be more efficient, and allows you to provide attendance in advance if known. Please note we are not able to make changes in attendance after one month. If you believe your student has been marked absent incorrectly, please have them speak to their teacher first, who will contact the office to update their record if necessary.
Student Parking – Just a quick reminder, there is no student parking in the school parking lot. All spaces are allocated to staff and guests. Students are also reminded to be kind and aware of our neighbours and not to block driveways, park in spots designated to local businesses, or the Bowness Sports Plex. We have already been contacted by local businesses who will be calling to have vehicles ticketed and towed.
